FAQ

General Questions

  • It’s More Than Milk prides itself on bringing up aspiring IBCLCs through internship. Please note lactation students attend and participate in our visits, under the supervision of an IBCLC. If you are not comfortable with their presence or supervised participation, please let us know by replying to your visit confirmation email.

  • We believe that lactation is not all or nothing.

There’s a lot of in between that gets overlooked when coming up with a long term, sustainable care plan. We pride ourselves on focusing on not only the couplet, but parent and baby individually. A parent’s mental health and level of overwhelm is factored into our interactions, care plans, and also to help you reach your goals.

At IMTM, we believe in promoting, supporting, and protecting breastfeeding AND that informed and supported is best.

  • Each family’s experience is unique, but it is common for parents to need 3-6 visits within the first year of life. We will be able to recommend the best course of action for you after our initial visit is complete.

  • A good place to start would be to verify your insurance through The Lactation Network or Wildflower Health. This will allow us to see if your insurance will cover your visits with It’s More Than Milk. Learn more here.

If you are not approved, you can pay out of pocket. You will be provided with an itemized receipt (often called a “super bill”), containing the info your insurance provider needs to reimburse you. We can also accept HSA or FSA cards.

Once that has been figured out, you can schedule your in office or virtual visit online, or reach out to us with any questions.

  • We can’t give you individualized lactation advice or care without a signed consent form and your health history. We are IBCLCs, but we are not your IBCLC.

  • IMTM is made up of a team of International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC). All of our IBCLCs are credentialed to accept many insurance plans through The Lactation Network and Wildflower Health. Self pay services are also available for those not covered through TLN or WH.

Visits

  • We understand that lactation issues are usually time sensitive. Virtual visits and office visits are typically available quickly. Home visits are extremely limited.

Exceptions to this may be if we are ill and have to reschedule several days worth of appointments. We will always be up front with you about our availability, but you can always check it on our scheduling page and book your own visit.

If there is a longer than average wait, you will be provided with the information of other IBCLCs who may be able to support you sooner.

  • A lactation consultation often takes 1-1.5 hours. It can be helpful to bring your baby hungry so an entire feeding can be observed by our team. Babies are weighed before and after feeding at in-person visits to assess milk intake and feeding behavior.

Read more about preparing for a visit and what to expect at a visit.

  • Home visits are extremely limited, and have a longer wait than office visits. Due to availability, home visits are reserved for families with newborns 4 weeks and under.

We offer home visits in Central and Southern Travis County, and Northern Hays County. There may be a travel fee that is not covered by insurance. You can see the coverage area and travel fee info here.

  • Yes, we do. We use a HIPAA-compliant application for virtual consults. This means the virtual consult will be safe and protected. We have worked with families from all over the US and internationally through virtual consultations. Learn more about virtual visits.

  • Virtual and in office visits can be self scheduled 24/7.

A credit card is required to schedule all visits, regardless of insurance coverage. The card will be used in the event of a no show or cancellation outside our policy. A different method of payment can be used the day of our visit.

  • If you are a current client, you are welcome to reach out to us. All lactation visits include two weeks of unlimited support by text or email. If it has been more than two weeks since our last visit, you and your baby would likely benefit from a full lactation visit.

Classes

  • We offer a private 1:1 prenatal consultation. In addition to going over info about feeding your baby in the first few weeks of their life, we will also address questions specific to your situation. This can include past lactation experiences, going over pump settings, or any other concerns you may have before your baby arrives. The prenatal consultation is offered virtually or in our South Austin office.

  • At this time, we offer private prenatal consultations in our office or virtually from your home. These visits include important information about getting lactation off to the right start. Our goal is to help families feel more confident going into their lactation journey.

  • Yes, we offer Cuddle and Flow Prenatal Lactation Consultation online in a private setting. The curriculum is created by our IBCLC and founder, Sunayana Weber.

Insurance and Payment

  • While we are not directly in network with any providers, we are partnered with third parties to provide in-network lactation services.

    • We work with The Lactation Network (TLN) to provide in-network lactation services for families with most Multiplan, Anthem BCBS PPO, BCBS PPO, and United Healthcare/UMR plans.

    • We work with Wildflower Health (WH) to provide in-network lactation services for families with Cigna.

    • Please note that we do not work with Aetna or Medicare in any capacity. Your visit will be self pay and a lactation super bill can be provided upon request.

If you are not approved or have a different insurance plan, you will self pay.

    • You can be provided with an itemized receipt (often called a “super bill”), containing the info your insurance provider needs to reimburse you. Please submit this to your provider along with any specific forms they may have on their website.

    • It can be helpful to call member services and ask about the process for submitting for out-of-network reimbursement, as every insurer does it a little differently.

    • Please note that It’s More Than Milk does not submit this information for you. The responsibility for insurance reimbursement is yours.

  • The best way to get the answer is to call the member services number on the back of your insurance ID card. Ask if they will reimburse you for lactation support by an out-of-network provider.

By law, insurers are required to cover “breastfeeding support, supplies and counseling” for every birth with no co-pay or deductible. This is a part of the Affordable Care Act. Sometimes getting reimbursed by insurance requires frequent contact follow ups to remind providers of their responsibility per ACA.

  • It’s More Than Milk can accept cash, credit cards, Venmo, PayPal, or your FSA/HSA cards. Payments are due at time of service, unless discussed ahead of time. Bartering for services is an option in some circumstances.

    • Cancellations made less than 24 hours before the scheduled appointment will be subject to a fee of $50 with the credit card on file. Rescheduling is handled on a case-by-case basis. This applies to self pay and TLN approved clients.

    • Clients more than 15 minutes late to in-person visits and more than 10 minutes late to virtual visits will have a shortened lactation consulting session. Alternatively, the visit may be rescheduled with a fee to a date and time convenient for It’s More Than Milk Lactation Services LLC. This applies to self pay and TLN approved clients.

    • No call, no show in-person visits will be charged a $100.00 fee to the credit card on file. This applies to self pay and TLN approved clients.

    • No call, no show virtual visits will be charged a $50.00 fee to the credit card on file. This applies to self pay and TLN approved clients.
